Remote proofing is very straightforward in ColorProof. A job is exported in some manner to .job format from the Host site, and the Remote site scans a hotfolder or FTP location and picks up .job files and outputs them locally, replacing the calibration info from the Host site with the Remote calibration file.
For two sites to be compatible for Remote Proofing, they must be configured with the same printer model (width can be different), same media, and calibrated to the same Calibration Set. For custom media, it will be necessary to export the Media and Calibration Set from the Host site to the Remote.
Starting in ColorProof 5.5, it is possible to import .job files coming from 5.4 or 5.3, but that is the limit down-version. You cannot import .job files from 5.5 into older versions, nor are 5.4 and 5.3 compatible with each other, and so on and so forth.
Setting up the Host ColorProof:
In ColorProof: System/Remote Proofing/Remote Proofing Sites, first create a Remote Site by clicking Edit and then the green plus button in the upper left corner.
Name the site, and choose your options for Read-Only (Embedded profiles = larger .job size) vs Editable (Linked profiles = smaller .job size) format as well as Password protection, if desired.
If you choose to link the profiles, you must have all the same Proof Standards and Spot Color Sets also loaded on the Remote Site ColorProof system.
Under Target Location, you can choose to send to either a Network Location or an FTP site:
- For Network Location, the remote site must be VPN'd into the host site's network in order for the connection to work. The path you select must be a true server path, for example:
C:\Users\Lindsay\Desktop\Remote Proofing is WRONG
\\LINDSAY-PC\Users\Lindsay\Desktop\Remote Proofing is CORRECT
- For FTP, VPN is not required between the two locations. It does not matter where the FTP site is hosted, as long as the login and password are available to both sites.
Once your Remote Proofing site has been defined, you can either manually export jobs by right-clicking in the History or Jobs tab and choosing "Send To", as well as in the File menu of the Manual Job Manager, or you can configure a Workflow for automatic export of jobs to the Remote Site.
In the Workflows Tab, create a normal Hotfolder and Workflow with your preferred settings. The Hotfolder will be the input path for your PDFs or Tifs (not .job files!), as with every other normal local Hotfolder - it is not linked to the Remote Site folder or FTP directory that was defined above.
In the Workflow, under the Printer tab, at the top there is a checkbox for "Export Job for Remote Proofing". Select that box, and below you will see the option to define which Target Remote Site to send the jobs to. Additionally, it is possible to enable the function to "Print On Local Printer Before Exporting" so you can have a pair of hard copy proofs that match between the two locations.
Setting up the Remote ColorProof:
On System/Remote Proofing, scroll down to "Import FTP Settings" or "Import Hotfolder Settings" and select the check box on one or the other, depending on the connection option defined at the Host Site. Define the login credentials for the FTP or paste the network path for Job Import Hotfolder.
Do routine maintenance, and calibrate the printer. You are ready to receive .job files!
