How to move licenses from one system to another

This self-service feature is designed to give you more control over your licenses, similar to the mobility provided by physical dongles. It allows you to move all licenses between systems, e.g. when upgrading hardware, replacing a damaged system, or similar, without the need to contact GMG.

Note: GMG Manage transfers the entire license system, including all licenses, equivalent to moving a license dongle from one system to another. Partial transfers of individual licenses or options are not supported due to the dependencies on the Software Update Contract (SUC). Prerequisites:

• Online license systems only: This feature applies only to online licensing systems, not hardware dongles.
• Empty target system: The target system must be empty (i.e., it should not have an existing license).
• AppService version requirement: Both systems involved must be running AppService version 2.3.51.740 or higher. See also: Install latest AppService version

How to transfer licenses from one system to another

1. Open GMG Manage and navigate to the 'Systems' tab.
2. Click the 'Transfer licenses' icon next to the system you want to transfer from (the source system).
3. Select the target system from the list of available systems. This should be the empty system where the licenses will be moved to.
4. Confirm the transfer in the dialog box that appears.
5. Refresh the license window in the Application Service to accelerate the operation (reducing the time from potential 1-2 hours to a few minutes).
   

License Transfer Outcome
Once the transfer is complete, the following changes occur. At first glance, nothing seems to have changed as the source and target systems keep their place in the list.  You will, however, notice that the computer name and location data are swapped,  as the license system has been transferred from one machine to another (indicated by a pending icon until the process is complete).

• The target system takes on the old system’s serial number and inherits all associated licenses.
• The source system now carries the new system’s serial number and will no longer have any active licenses.
• The machine IDs of both systems are associated with the interchanged serial numbers.
