Dynamic Spot Color Conversion

Dynamic profiling enables GMG ColorServer to request conversion profiles and spot color variants from GMG OpenColor as needed. You can access and modify separation settings directly in the ColorServer conversion template, including the ink configuration for your digital printer. This flexibility lets you use one conversion template for multiple ink set variants, reducing the number of required hotfolders and resources.

Dynamic spot color conversion calculates new separations when required, aiming to minimize the number of output channels. In contrast, static spot color conversion uses the predefined separation rule from OpenColor without recalculating separations.

Add Dynamic OpenColor Spot Color calculation to your conversion template

  1. Drag the DYN symbol onto the Spot Colors arrow.
  2. Select your input project from the Input Color Space drop-down field. 
  3. Select your output project. The Output Color Space drop-down field lists all OpenColor projects that contain a separation rule with the selected OpenColor input project.
  4. Enable Customize Output Channels to allow new separation rules to be calculated for spot color conversion.
  5. For dynamic conversions, manually activate or deactivate output channels as required.
  6. To automatically reduce the number of output channels, enable Automatically Reduce Output Channels and define a Delta E threshold as the quality criterion.

    Note: In fully automated workflows, output channels can also be specified through a Job Ticket or the API.
  7. If required, enable Reduce Only ECG Channels.
  8. Adjust the Total Area Coverage as needed.
  9. Enable Channel Mapping if required.

Note: If the Customize Output Channels option is disabled, ColorServer uses the exact separation values defined in the OpenColor separation rule for spot color conversion.

 

Limitation: For dynamic profiling to work correctly in ColorServer, the OpenColor project must contain only one separation rule. If multiple separation rules exist for the same output project, ColorServer job processing may fail with the error: “Invalid number of output colorants.”

 

Separation rule variants

When ColorServer processes a job using a conversion template with dynamic spot color conversion, it may generate new profiles for the applicable separation rule if the requested color combination has not been calculated previously.

The newly generated profiles are listed in OpenColor in the profile list for the corresponding separation rule.
