GMG offers three licensing models to activate and manage your software:
Dongle-based licensing
Online licensing
User-based licensing via GMG Manage (new)
Each model supports different workflows and technical environments. This article helps you understand the differences so you can choose the licensing option that best fits your needs.
1. Dongle-based licensing
A USB dongle acts as a local license key linked to a serial number. It must be plugged into the system running GMG software. Licenses are activated and managed via the Application Service.
Key Characteristics:
License is stored on a physical device.
One dongle per environment.
No internet connection required.
2. Online Licensing
Online licensing replaces the dongle with a digital license. Licenses are activated and managed via the Application Service.
Key Characteristics:
No dongle needed.
Requires internet connection for activation and periodic validation.
Works in virtualized environments
3. User-based licensing (via GMG Manage)
This newest model links licenses directly to named user accounts. It's used in selected GMG software services and supports cloud-based workflows.
Key Characteristics:
Users sign in with their GMG account.
License follows the user, not the machine.
Managed via GMG Manage for full visibility and control.
Currently supported for:
Newer software products and cloud-first services.
