The algorithms used in the background by Calibrator (formerly with ProductionSuite: SmartProfiler) get frequently adjusted. You'll now also see for some UV printers new ink mixing mode options during the linearization like High, Higher, Maximum and Ultra.
These add more and more light ink into the solids. This uses a lot more ink, but also makes prints look smoother and can achieve at the same print speed a larger gamut (when switching to a different ink split type check the CHROMA value under the chart. If it increases, your gamut becomes bigger).
This can be especially interesting on an INCA where you can increase saturation without increasing RID (= reducing print speed).
The modes MEDIUM and EcoSave have the same gamut as BALANCED yet use less ink and can produce more grainy looking print results (use for greater viewing distance).
But these algorithms can only work during the creation of a PMM. They can not retroactively be applied to existing PMMs.
Our developers are constantly adding new printers and apply minor tweaks and improvements to the presets of existing printers in Calibrator. So we can't say what specific changes were implemented at which time for which printer.
Our recommendation is to replace any profile that's been created 2014 or earlier with new ones. Until 2.1.7 the PMM stored a lot of data cached by SmartProfiler, which would result in PMMs that could be 50MB or even larger. Then newer 2.2.x versions (as of July 2015) could further change some of the internal structures or use different chart variants - in those cases an EDIT PMM might result in a "server files not found" error. This means you can still work with this PMM yet the internal structure differs from how we'd build now PMMs for this printer type and is therefore no longer compatible with the old data stored within the PMM.
This affects only the "EDIT PMM". Any spot color definition, recalibration, generating of additional color spaces, adjusting dot gain etc remains unaffected. You're only unable to use earlier parts of this PMM to rebuild later parts of the PMM or check settings.
If you get the "server file not found" message then the internal structure is now substantially different and likely profiling quality for this printer type has been improved. It is therefore recommended to replace the PMM with a new one to achieve the optimal possible quality.
